Summer Printmaking Intensive Exhibition 2022

Summer Printmaking Intensive Exhibition 2022

August 12 through 19, 2022

Building 9, Governors Island

For six weeks of summer 2022, teenagers from NYC public schools studied the intersections of printmaking and social justice in the second edition of Shandaken's Summer Printmaking Intensive.

During the program, participating students studied the history of American social justice movements in the 20th century with a focus on their resulting/constitutive ephemera, and learned printmaking techniques like monoprint, silkscreen, and Risography. Field trips to NYC institutions like MoMA, New Museum, and Interference Archive illustrated how other artists had encountered and digested political engagement, and collaborations with other programs like Swiss Institute Teens and Prep for Prep created opportunities for teens to teach one another their new skills. Each participant created a final project inspired by a social justice cause affecting their own lives. Teens were paid $15 per hour to participate in 150 hours of class time.

Artworks created by the class were gathered into a free exhibition available to all Governors Island visitors.
