Jonathan González shares a diptych of original text and a drawing under the joint title Who Knows, But That On The Lower Frequencies, I Speak For You?—from the final line of Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man.

Riffing upon the significance of being on Governors Island as it pertains to the various ecologies, conditions of social isolation when in studio, and the episodic developments of the island revealed through its archives, González leans into the poetics of lower frequencies in order to animate an inherited undercurrent of memory. A circuitous assemblage of charcoal depictions and a shifting prose of citation and recitation made way for González to prioritize returning to daily practice—doing something everyday—all the while negotiating the hauntings of past, present, and future in the built environment.

Jonathan González is a NY-based artist working at the intersections of multidisciplinary and collaborative practices for performance, text, sculpture, and film. Their work refers to the afterlives of slavery through eccentric juxtapositions, abstraction, and climate/planetary considerations.
